County Democrats Lobby Congressman Henry Cuellar

Today, June 17th, fourteen progressive activists from various parts of Guadalupe County met with Mark Gonzales of Congressman Henry Cuellar’s staff to deliver a letter and supporting documents urging the Congressman to work to strengthen the American Clean Energy and Security Act.

JC Dufresne, Nancy Taylor, Phil Bennett, Harvey Hild, Mike Magee, Denise Crettenden, Jason Moore, Sarah Moser, Jim Leissner, Alicia Helton, Paul Martin, Roland James, and Jim Green all gathered to show our support a stronger clean energy bill. Mr. Gonzales promised to pass our request to the Congressman. I asked him to please have the Congressman get back to us on our request and he promised would. I reminded Mr. Gonzales that this was our third visit about this issue and it should be taken as a measure of our commitment to this issue and we want to see real action on our agenda. We won’t really know if we have any impact for some time to come so we’ll have to maintain pressure by continuing to contact Congressman Cuellar. I urge you to contact Congressman Cuellar by phone or mail.

The Honorable Henry Cuellar

On 14 November The Guadalupe County Democratic Party unanimously and with an enthusiastic standing ovation elected Phillip Bennett, an Elementary School Teacher, military veteran, political and community activist, to succeed Anthony Bazan as Chair of the Guadalupe County Democratic Party. Mr. Bazan leaves his party position, December 31st, 2008, to pursue family and business interests in Dallas, Texas.
"I am honored to have this extraordinary privilege to contribute to my party and the people of Guadalupe County," said Bennett to the gathering of the Executive Committee that governs Democratic Party affairs in Guadalupe County.
Addressing the precinct Chairs and numerous volunteers, Bennett emphasized he was committed to working to “Turn Texas Blue” one vote at a time in Guadalupe County." He added, "I am committed, as we all are, to continue building the infrastructure to retain and expand our party's success in Guadalupe County. The things we did that helped Democrats win and increase margins in 2008 must be spread to every corner of the county as we work together as one party for a better future."
In his farewell address Tony Bazan told the gathering that he recommended Phil Bennett for the position of Democratic Chair. Tony Bazan and Phil Bennett worked closely together on several projects during the campaign season and Mr. Bazan stated he was impressed with Phil Bennett’s drive, commitment, and ability to get the job done.
"I am very happy that a man of Phil Bennett's accomplishments and abilities has agreed to lead our county party to the next level," said Duane McCune Chair Precinct 307. Phil Bennett is the right man to keep the Democratic Party strong so we can build on our successes."
